McLaren team principal Andrea Stella summarized the results of the first practice sessions in Monaco, but started by observing the local weather.
Andrea Stella: “We have to constantly monitor the weather every day. It seems like it’s a bit unstable, and this could really affect the course of the weekend. Today, at the start of the first practice, Lando Norris took to the track on soft tires as we wanted to assess the overall balance, and then continued on the track on medium tyres.
As the session progressed I compared the lap times to those of a year ago as it seemed to me that the speeds were quite high. I think this is a real testament to the improvements we’ve made in 2024. We know that the MCL38 laps on average over a second faster than last year’s car.
At the same time, our tasks this season mainly do not concern specific results that we want to achieve, but how intensively we can modernize the car and what the extent of the improvements introduced will be. If we can develop the chassis at the same pace as the last 12 months, we can challenge Red Bull.”
According to the results of the first Friday training in Monaco, Oscar Piastri set the second fastest time, his partner fourth.
