Verstappen: The weekend is going according to the worst-case scenario

Max Verstappen set the fourth fastest time in the second training session in Monaco, losing more than five tenths to the holder of the best time, Charles Leclerc. The Red Bull Racing driver said the bumps on the track make driving the car difficult, and admitted that the team has no idea yet how to solve the problem.

Sergio Perez set the eighth fastest time and agreed with his teammate that Ferrari rivals are currently out of reach for Red Bull.

Max Verstappen (4th): “I don’t think I can describe what exactly is happening here. Everything is very complicated and I did not expect this. So far the weekend is going according to the worst-case scenario.

The large number of bumps and curbs makes it very difficult to drive. As a result, I’ve wasted a lot of time at every bump, and we still don’t see a clear path to follow to resolve the issues.

The problems in Monaco are different to the problems we had at Imola and cannot be solved by changing the settings. This is simply impossible, because the problems are related to the philosophy of the machine. Nothing can change overnight. We will try to improve the situation a little, but I don’t expect miracles.

Ferraris are miles ahead of us. I don’t even think about it now and I just want to solve the problems we are facing, I want to make the car a little more manageable. We’ll see what positions we end up in, but I don’t expect miracles.”

Sergio Perez (8th): “It will be difficult for us this weekend, because the limitations of our car are not so easy to circumvent. Let’s see what the team can do tonight. Max and I drove cars that were slightly different, so I don’t know what his problems were. The long-distance pace should be faster, but it is still too early to make predictions.

In my opinion, Ferrari is out of reach for us at the moment. They are very fast and we are having serious problems putting together a fast lap. We have several issues that need to be resolved to improve. I hope we can get closer to the leaders, but at the moment it seems like it will be difficult for us to do this.”
