Max Verstappen’s predictions after Friday’s training came true: in qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix he only set the sixth fastest time. The Red Bull Racing driver said he wasted too much time in slow corners as he could not attack the curbs.
His teammate Sergio Perez set the eighteenth fastest time and stopped fighting in the first session.
Max Verstappen (6th): “I am not disappointed with the starting position, but I am disappointed with our speed, which was not there all weekend. However, this did not come as a surprise to me, because even before the stage we knew that we would have problems.
I simply can’t attack the curbs; I had to go around it in the second sector. It felt like I was driving a kart without any suspension or shock absorption, so it was very difficult. I felt comfortable in the fast corners, but lost too much time in the slow corners. The car bounces a lot on bumps.
There are still a number of tracks ahead of us, on which there are many bumps and on which we have to attack the curbs. So we will have problems there.
As for tomorrow’s race, I can’t do much because modern cars are too wide for this track and it is impossible to overtake. Moreover, our car is not the fastest on this circuit; we don’t have a speed advantage. Let’s see what we can do.”
Sergio Perez (18th): “We’ve been having problems all weekend, I can’t get everything out of the car. I couldn’t find a rhythm in qualifying, which left me far behind.
My last fastest lap looked good at first, but then I got stuck in traffic and lost a few tenths in turns six and seven. This was enough not to pass, but I was only half a second behind the best time.
I should definitely have made it to the final, but with this density I had to do a perfect lap.”
