Mattia Binotto: For the first time in the season we had no speed

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto commented on the results of the Hungarian Grand Prix and the team’s decision to transfer Charles Leclerc to Hard tyres, after which the Monegask lost a chance to win and finished sixth.

Q: Tell us what happened in the race because of what you finished below the starting positions?
Mattia Binotto: We need a few days to analyze everything and find the answer to this question. Obviously we didn’t have the speed we expected today. On all three compositions – Soft, Medium and Hard – the speed did not meet expectations. Perhaps this is due to the weather – today was cooler than Friday. This made it more difficult to achieve high speed and maintain position on the track.

Today the car was not fast enough – this happened for the first time in the season. For the first time, the car did not meet our expectations, but now we need to understand the reasons for this.

Q: But in some parts of the race the car was quite competitive…
Mattia Binotto: In any case, the machine did not work as we expected. On Friday we had a pace advantage over our rivals, but today the situation has changed.

Question: Why did you decide to put hard tires on Charles’ car? Was it an attempt to respond to Max Verstappen’s “cutting” to cross the finish line on hard tires? Have you thought about increasing the length on Medium and putting Soft on the last laps?
Mattia Binotto: We knew that Hard tires had a certain problem with warming up – it takes several laps, but we thought these tires would be fast and allow us to regain positions at the end of the race. However, the tires did not perform as we expected. I think the main reason is that the machine didn’t work as we expected. But let’s analyze everything before jumping to conclusions.

Q: Don’t you think Chief Strategist Iñaka Rueda needs help?
Mattia Binotto: I believe we have reached a balance this year. We did everything right in Austria, we often made the right decisions. There were also mistakes, but opponents also made mistakes, which they didn’t pay much attention to. Not just Ignace, but the whole team is doing a great job and I fully support them.
