The Monaco Grand Prix ended for Sergio Perez on the first lap when he collided with Kevin Magnussen on the climb to the third corner. The stewards did not look into the incident, but Sergio placed full blame for the collision on the Haas driver.
Max Verstappen finished off the podium for the first time this season and called the race boring.
Max Verstappen (6th): “I finished in the same position as where I started. The red flags simply ruined our strategy. I knew it would be extremely difficult to complete more than 70 laps on Medium tyres, so immediately after the restart I had to drive four seconds slower than possible. I actually rode relaxed, but it was very boring.
In Canada we also have a difficult weekend ahead due to the nature of the circuit and the need to attack curbs, and our car is not particularly good at this. However, Montreal has resurfaced the asphalt, which could lead to some surprises as we don’t know what the grip levels will be.
The team had a difficult weekend in Monaco. Sergio’s car was badly damaged. It was probably one of those weekends you just want to forget.
If we talk about positive results, we have understood the weak side of our car and now we will work to correct the shortcomings. Once we solve this problem, we can immediately gain back a lot of time. We have to do this.”
Sergio Perez (meeting): “I’m shaking a little after such a hard blow. If you look at the camera footage from my car, you’ll see that Kevin’s car didn’t even come next to me. The barrier was getting closer and if you keep driving with the accelerator on the floor, there is only one outcome.
Magnussen could have crashed into the barrier as well as into me – there was no room for two cars. At some point he had to realize this. I have been in his shoes many times and simply backed out because there was no other option.
Why did he want me to give him space when he wasn’t even on level ground with me? The racer sees a wall and at some point realizes that he has to retreat.
The blow was very powerful and I am disappointed with this outcome. At that stage of the race there was no need to attack in this way. It is important to respond calmly to such things.”
