Valtteri Bottas: One pit stop strategy didn’t work

The race in Hungary was the fourth in a row in which the Alfa Romeo drivers did not earn points. Guanyu Zhou finished thirteenth and team-mate Valtteri Bottas retired with five laps to go due to fuel system problems.

Frederic Vasseur, team leader: “A day that promised a lot ended in disappointment. At the start, both riders lost five places, after which it was difficult to count on points. Valtteri was able to break into the top ten and stay closer to the finish, but had to retire due to fuel system problems.

Zhou’s race was ruined at the start. He could still rise to thirteenth place, but the team was counting on more. Too bad we didn’t show anything after the high speed in qualifying. We have a summer break to figure out what went wrong and to fight for the points again in the last three European races of the season.”

Guanyu Zhou (13th): “The weather was uncertain, but not dangerous in itself. It was slippery in the last laps, but in general everything is fine. I think our plan didn’t work today – on the first lap there were problems, I lost positions and the strategy of one pit stop didn’t work, and I had to go into the pits one more time, which caused me to roll back.

Otherwise we had a fast pace – we deserved more. When we talk about pure speed, we are back to the level we showed at Silverstone.

I learned a lot this season – it was difficult, but interesting. I feel like there is still a lot of room to add. It’s good to get some rest. I hope we come back strong and fight for better results.”

Valtteri Bottas (20th): “Today was difficult – just like in the last race in France, the Hard tires were not as fast as I had hoped. We thought we had picked the best chance of earning points, but unfortunately the one-stop strategy didn’t work.

In addition, a few laps before the finish had to stop due to technical problems – the car just lost power and I don’t know the details yet. The team and I will find out the reason, but I think the chance of earning points today was not great.

I’m looking forward to the summer break so that I can rest in the second half of the season and come back at full strength.”
