Lewis Hamilton pitted on the 51st lap of the Monaco Grand Prix in an attempt to cut ahead of Max Verstappen, but after his pit stop the Red Bull Racing driver still remained on track ahead of Lewis.
The broadcast included a radio exchange between Hamilton and his engineer, in which Lewis asked why he was not told that the exit lap after the pit stop was crucial for the ‘cut’ to work. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admitted that the team was wrong in this case.
“There was a miscommunication on the pit wall and we made a mistake,” said Toto. “We should have told Lewis that the exit lap was crucial for cutting, but there was a discussion within the team because we were concerned that if we overloaded the tires on that lap we might have problems later.
As a result, Lewis received a contradictory and apparently incorrect message. This is the team’s fault. “We wanted to close the gap on Verstappen and make some cuts, but we gave Lewis the completely wrong message.”
