George Russell is happy with the results of the Hungarian weekend where he took the first pole of his career and climbed to the podium…
Q: Before the race you said it would be hard to win but you started well, had a great first lap. Did you ever think you could win?
George Russell: Naturally. But the race proved difficult due to the rain, which started to drip from time to time. On the Soft tires I had a very good start and in the first laps I was able to break Carlos off by three seconds. Then the rain stopped and I switched to Medium.
We made both pit stops quite early to avoid being interrupted by Max and Ferrari. But in this race Max was too fast for us. This strategy made everything really complicated in the last part, when I was riding the Medium. The engineer said there were 25 laps to go, it started to rain a little, the temperature dropped. I knew the last laps would be very difficult, Lewis was approaching from behind – he had excellent pace at the end of the race.
Our team has a lot to be proud of. We did everything right and were able to claim the win. Unfortunately not everything went in our favour, but the team made no mistakes.
Q: How do you rate your performance this weekend?
George Russell: Good weekend. Pole on Saturday, a great first stint on the Soft, these tires were the best in the conditions.
There is always a certain disappointment when you finish below the first position after starting from pole position, but considering objective factors this is a worthy result.
Q: With the ups and downs of the Hungarian weekend, shouldn’t the team focus on creating a new car concept for next season?
George Russell: It is important to keep an open mind. I don’t think changing the concept of the car will make the car go faster, quite the contrary. Sometimes you just have to stick with the process and move on.
Personally, I believe in every member of our team. We are making serious progress, you saw the results on Saturday and Sunday. At the start of the season we finished one minute behind the winner and in the last two races we lost about ten seconds at the finish. The team is moving in the right direction.
