After the race in Monaco, which turned into a not-too-fast procession with minimal changes throughout the peloton, various proposals are being made to prevent this from happening again in the future. One of these is to make special tires for Monaco, but Pirelli racing boss Mario Isola says this will be hampered by the lack of testing opportunities at the city circuit.
Mario Isola: “Creating special tires is a very real task, but the only problem is finding a circuit similar to Monaco for testing. To check the composition, we always test tires on different types of circuits, but Monaco is a unique circuit and we simply don’t have another circuit with similar characteristics.
We can’t ask the city to close roads to allow for track testing – that’s simply not possible. And as I said, it is very difficult to find another circuit comparable to Monaco.
The overtaking problem is clearly visible in Monaco and has to do with the characteristics of the circuit, and not with the number of pit stops or any other factor. The organizers cannot expand the track and the cars are too big. For example, in Formula 3 we saw a good race with many overtaking actions, but there were fewer cars. It doesn’t work that way in Formula 1.
We know from experience that teams simply set the pace to reduce the number of pit stops. If you have to make multiple pit stops, in my opinion they will all do them in one lap and that has no influence whatsoever.”
