28 years ago Schumacher took his first victory in a Ferrari

On June 2, 1996, an event occurred that is remembered today by many in the motorsport world, especially Ferrari and its fans. On this day 28 years ago, Michael Schumacher took his first victory in a red car for the Italian team.

Victories are different, achieved in different ways, and although the number of points received by a successful driver and his team is the same and depends only on the rules in force during that period, we can still say that their value is also different.

Much has been said and written about that Spanish Grand Prix, the race on the rainy Catalan ring was so beautiful, and you can read the story about it again on our website, published in the winter of 2008. But I would like to want to add a few lines, for example to quote the words of Sir Stirling Moss, the famous Briton who became vice world champion four times in the 1950s.

“It wasn’t just any race. It was a demonstration of superiority and genius,” he said of Michael at the time. “This man is in a class of his own.” There has never been a driver so clearly superior in terms of capabilities. It was one of the most stunning examples of fantastic craftsmanship I have ever seen.”

The team from Maranello shared on social networks a small selection of photos taken that day, accompanied by a very short comment:

“On this day in 1996, Michael Schumacher won his first Grand Prix with Ferrari. This victory was the first of many.”

Let’s look at the statistics: the victory in Barcelona was the twentieth in the career of the German driver, at that time already a two-time world champion. And there were 71 more, giving him five more titles while driving Ferrari cars.
