The Korean car manufacturer Hyundai has its eye on Formula 1. British journalist Joe Savard reports, based on his sources, that Hyundai management plans to expand its racing program – in addition to participating in the World Rally Championship – in order to debut in Formula 1.
The Hyundai works team in the WRC is led by Cyril Abiteboul, who previously led the Renault team in Formula 1. Most likely, he will be asked to lead the new project.
Hyundai does not want to follow the path of Michael Andretti, who is trying to build a team from scratch, but plans to take over one of the existing Formula 1 teams, as Audi did.
Unfortunately for the Korean car manufacturer, no Formula 1 team is currently for sale, at least not publicly. However, Hyundai’s generous offer may interest some of the current team owners.
