1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve criticized Red Bull Racing’s decision to extend Sergio Perez’s contract for a further two seasons. According to the Canadian, Sergio gives in too much to his teammate to stay in the team.
“Perez is having his worst season at Red Bull,” says Villeneuve. “Normally his first few races are great, but this year he couldn’t even do that. Moreover, Perez now loses even more!
At the start of the season he was already behind Max, now he has lost another half second. Ten cars fit in this hole. I don’t know why the team made this decision.”
Commenting on another personnel decision by the Alpine team to end the partnership with Esteban Ocon, Jacques Villeneuve called it logical: “I am not surprised that Ocon and Alpine have parted ways. There was no chance that they would be able to handle the two French riders. And what’s the point?
French team with two French riders. What market were they trying to enter? Only in French, but that makes no sense. It was clear that one of them would leave the team. With his actions in Monaco, Ocon made the team’s decision easier. “He is not the kind of rider you try to keep.”
