On Thursday, the FIA presented new technical regulations, which will come into force in 2026. One of the key features of the upcoming innovations is a reduction in machine weight by 30 kg. Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso doubts whether such a goal is achievable.
“I think it is impossible to achieve a weight loss of 30 kg,” said Fernando Alonso in Montreal. – If the power plant becomes 50% electric, we need the right batteries, and only thanks to the power plant the cars will add 20 to 30 kg in weight. And if we want to make cars 30 kg lighter than the current ones, we will actually have to achieve a weight reduction of 60 kg. For teams, this is probably an unattainable goal.
They still have two years to achieve this goal. It happens in Formula 1 that goals that seem unattainable in 2024 become reality in 2026, because the teams have smart people.”
Commenting on the new regulations in general, Fernando drew attention to their complexity for ordinary fans: “The regulations look complicated, but the fans have to make the judgement. For us racers, we have to do more work behind the wheel because of the need to press different buttons.
The technologies of modern cars are very complex and it does not look like they will be simplified in 2026. And the engines are obviously very ambitious in terms of their objectives. It is possible that some of the aerodynamic changes we have to make on the straights are intended to compensate for the overly ambitious targets for the power units.
We racers want more competition, diverse winners and opportunities for everyone. We don’t want someone to dominate for three or four years, with only one team and one or two riders winning. I hope that the 2026 regulations will help with this, because this is the only thing Formula 1 is missing. Otherwise everything is great.”
