British McLaren driver Lando Norris achieved the best time during the first free practice session of the Formula 1 stage in Canada.
In his fastest attempt, Norris completed the lap in 1 minute 24.435 seconds. The second result was shown by the Spanish Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz (+0.328), the top three was closed by another driver of the Italian team, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (+0.871).
The current world champion and season leader Max Verstappen (Red Bull) set the fifth time (+2.067).
Shortly before the start of the session, hail fell in the area and it took some time for track personnel to partially dry the racing surface. The drivers spent most of the practice on intermediate tires and only tried the soft tires at the end of the session. Many drivers found themselves stuck in traffic during their last attempt.
The Canadian Grand Prix takes place on the Montreal circuit from June 7 to 9.
