Hamilton: On Saturday we will find out what positions we are in

George Russell showed the second fastest time in the second practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver said that due to the weather conditions we could not judge in which positions the team was compared to its rivals. Lewis Hamilton agrees with him and shows the seventh result.

George Russell (2nd): “Good day, but it was difficult to gather much information because the track conditions changed every lap. First it was wet, then the asphalt started to dry out and then it started to rain again! Overall the car drives well, but we won’t know until Saturday where we stand compared to the rest. However, on Friday I trusted the car and had confidence in everything.

The third practice normally focuses on preparing for qualifying, but this time we will have to assess the race pace. We need to clearly understand what exactly we want to change on the car before we qualify.

To be honest, neither driver nor team learned much on Friday. It could be the same again on Saturday, so it will be interesting.”

Lewis Hamilton (7th): “Everything went fine on Friday. Despite the weather I couldn’t wait to get on the track. I’m glad we made the most of the time we had, because on these types of tracks it’s all about gradually building up the pace.

In the training the task was to evaluate the conditions and the new asphalt that was laid this year.

The car was fast all day, but I was unable to complete my fastest lap. Canada has one of the best circuits we’ve come across, so I really enjoyed it.

Lately we have had more problems on Saturdays, but I’m sure everything will be different here because the car responds to my actions. “Ultimately, we won’t know where we stand until Saturday, but things went well on Friday.”
