The weather forecast promises changeable weather for Sunday’s race in Montreal; Light rain is expected during the day on Sunday in the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec. However, if the race is held on a dry track, Pirelli considers the optimal strategy of two pit stops.
Mario IsolaHead of Pirelli Racing: “We witnessed a very intense qualifying session, evidenced by the fact that the two fastest drivers posted the same time and that there were drivers from six teams in the top ten.
The course of the weekend is influenced by the weather and everything indicates that this may be the case on Sunday. Although all sessions on Saturday were dry, the teams gathered limited information as they were not able to complete a long series of laps until the third practice session.
New asphalt was laid throughout the lap and, as expected, provided minimal grip at the start of the weekend, but the road surface condition soon improved. However, this led to significant granulation of the tires, especially the Medium compound, which almost everyone used for a long series of laps.
If the race is held in dry conditions, it is likely that the two pit stop strategy will be most effective and the choice of two hard sets will prevail. This explains why seven teams were left with two hard sets per driver.
A one-stop strategy with Medium and Hard is theoretically possible, but is quite risky. Someone may start with this option in mind, but at the same time leave the option for themselves to switch to a two-stop strategy.”
