In qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen set exactly the same time, 1:12.000 s, as pole holder George Russell, but because the Red Bull Racing driver completed his lap later, he is second at the start. The reigning world champion is satisfied with the result, given the problems the team faced during the weekend.
Sergio Perez set the sixteenth fastest time and stopped fighting in the first part of qualifying.
Max Verstappen (2nd): “Really solid results. I think overall we qualified well. We faced certain problems all weekend, so if they had told me before qualifying that I would be showing for the second time, I would have agreed. In the final the battle turned out to be very exciting and tomorrow an exciting race awaits us.
I felt comfortable in the car on the last lap in Monaco, but it just wasn’t our track. This weekend we were also unable to prepare properly for qualifying.
I think we have an interesting race ahead of us, we’ll see how the tires behave. The weather can also be a factor: sometimes it rains, sometimes not. I hope it will be very interesting.”
Sergio Perez (16th): “The biggest problem was that I couldn’t “turn on” the rear tires. This made qualifying an absolute disaster for me. I paid the price because the car slid a lot in the corners due to a lack of grip.
Problem with curbs? Today my problems had more to do with the tires than the curbs. In such weather conditions we are not always able to get the tires working. Because of this I didn’t have any confidence in the car and I couldn’t attack with full force, which was very disappointing.
We will see what the weather will be like in the race and what strategy we can come up with.”
