British driver Jamie Chadwick, a three-time W Series women’s champion, is in her second season competing in the Indy NXT, the American youth series that is considered a kind of preparatory stage for IndyCar.
Jamie competes for the Andretti team and finished last season in 12th place in the individual standings, and after five stages of this she is in 13th place, but she reached the podium for the first time in Indianapolis and today she starts from pole for for the first time at Road America, a road type circuit in Wisconsin.
In what amounts to something of a historic feat, Chadwick became the first woman to qualify for Indy NXT on a road course, and only the third woman in the series’ history to start from the pole.
“I’m very happy,” Jamie responded to her performance yesterday. “This weekend we had some balance problems, but when my teammate Louis Foster completed his lap I realized we have a good car. The track conditions improved and I thought we really had a chance to take full advantage of them.
The coming race promises to be difficult, but I have confidence in our abilities.”
Jamie’s previous best qualifying finish was a 4th starting position at the Detroit city race a week ago. The aforementioned teammate Chadwick also did not do badly: Foster set a 2nd fastest time and started from the front row. By the way, the 26-year-old British racer still continues to collaborate with Williams, and of course the Formula 1 team was one of the first to congratulate her: “Jamie has won pole! She became only the third woman in the history of this series to succeed. Our congratulations!”
