George Russell reached the podium in Canada, but this was not the result the Mercedes driver expected when he started from pole. George admitted that due to his own mistakes he missed the opportunity to achieve a better result than third place.
Lewis Hamilton finished fourth, recorded the fastest lap, but said he had one of his worst races and made too many mistakes.
George Russel (3rd): “I feel like opportunities were missed today. I was very fast on the intermediate tires at first, but then Lando started to overtake me. We switched to slicks, on which I made a few mistakes. I attacked with all my might, pushed my limits and paid the price.
In any case, I was on the podium for the first time this season. We had a really fast car this weekend that put us in contention for the win, which is nice. This is what Formula 1 is about and why we race.
We had the pace to win. Max Verstappen was very strong, but after switching to Medium at the end of the race I went very fast.
A mistake in the fight with Oscar Piastri, when I tried to attack him and lost position to Lewis, cost me at least second place. Who knows, if I hadn’t done this I might have been able to compete with Max closer to the finish. But we will remember everything that was positive about this weekend.”
