The entire Italian press is asking the same question: what happened to Ferrari, which only two weeks ago was cheered by the fans after Charles Leclerc’s victory in Monaco? Perhaps the general sentiments have been well expressed by Leo Turini, a famous motorsport journalist who has written about the Scuderia for more than forty years.
I can be called a master of journalistic clichés, here I am like Adrian Newey in aerodynamics. So…
It’s too bad to be true.
Of princes in the mud.
Red tide.
And so on…
There’s no point beating around the bush, we have to admit straight away that Ferrari’s performance in Montreal this year was the worst. Only two weeks passed after the triumph in Monte Carlo, and the joy gave way to burning disappointment. Although, of course, it was foolish to assume that the SF24 would immediately transform into a championship-winning car after that glorious Sunday in the Mediterranean principality. No, miracles do not exist in Formula 1.
But that’s not possible either. Something happened before our eyes that defies explanation. After qualifying on Saturday it became clear that nothing was working at all in the cars of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. And as the race progressed, regardless of whether the asphalt was wet or dry, the Scuderia fans experienced a depressing feeling that only grew stronger.
The weekend ended with Leclerc’s retirement and to top it all off, Sainz also flew off the track. In general, there were technical problems, driver errors and everything else. The car proved slow and unreliable and the team could not find a solution.
As far as I remember, Ferrari hasn’t had a double retirement since the 2022 Baku race. This begs the question: what happened? How did it become possible that Ferrari is suddenly inferior in terms of speed not only to Red Bull, McLaren and Mercedes, but even to Aston Martin, Williams and RB, which is actually a former Minardi?
If I knew the answer, I would do something different. No, it’s better this way: I would then ask to be hired instead of Frederic Vasseur!
As for the rest of the events of the Canadian Grand Prix, the course of which was affected by the weather, Max Verstappen’s face returned to his usual smile. He will also win the title this year, but McLaren is already quite close. I also liked how George Russell and Lewis Hamilton led the race.
As for Ferrari, I’d like to think it was just a nightmare, and when I wake up everything won’t be so bad.
