Verstappen: People always make up stories…

This is not the first race in a row that Sergio Perez’s performance has raised questions, and now he looks nothing like the driver who relatively recently won the Grand Prix and said he dreams of the championship title.

At the beginning of this season he reached the podium four times, but after that there was a clear decline and when Red Bull Racing announced last week that it would extend the contract with the Mexican for another two years, many were frankly surprised.

In Montreal, Max Verstappen was asked a direct question on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Maybe they decided to leave Perez to appease you and maintain some harmony in the team?”

Naturally, the three-time world champion rejected this version.

“I think this decision has nothing to do with such assumptions,” Max replied. – People always make up stories, but in this case these things are not related in any way. Right now I’m happy with everything. I have a contract until 2028 and I plan to drive for Red Bull until that contract expires.

I don’t even know what will happen next because I’m not sure if I want to continue my career, and this is the most important thing. But I’m trying not to think about it for now. I’m just happy that Sergio has extended his contract. Now he knows what he will do in the coming years, and he will benefit from it.

We have always worked very well together, everything is good in the team with stability, and this is also very important.”

Verstappen’s answer somewhat obscures the history of the relationship between the Red Bull teammates, which has not always been rosy, nor does it fully reflect the Dutchman’s feelings. Sources quoted by the BBC believe that there is still a possibility that Max will leave Red Bull at the end of 2025.

The decision to extend Perez’s contract was made by Christian Horner, the team manager, and this was done in the interests of stability. Carlos Sainz was expected to become Verstappen’s partner, but Red Bull recalls that in 2015-2016, when they drove together for Toro Rosso, there was already friction between them and Horner does not want this situation to repeat itself level repeats.

Since there is currently no one among the drivers in the Red Bull program who has clearly shown convincing results and is considered really promising, Horner has chosen to maintain the status quo.
