Former Formula 1 race director faces death threats after controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix decision

Former Formula 1 racing director Michael Masi has revealed he received death threats online after last year’s scandal.

Earlier, Masi resigned from his post amid a scandal over the results of last season’s final stage race in the United Arab Emirates. The 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ended with the victory of Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who on the last lap overtook Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) after the accident of Nicholas Latifi (Williams) and took the title.

After the race, Mercedes claimed the Dutchman started driving in safety car mode, and also called the procedure for driving in safety car mode incorrect, and filed two protests, which were dismissed by the judges. The judging team led by Masi allowed several circle cars, located between Hamilton and Verstappen, to pass the race leader.

There have been dark days. And, of course, I felt like the most hated person in the world. I was threatened with death. People said they would come for me and my family. The messages were shocking. They were offensive, vile.

I didn’t want to talk to anyone. It had a physical impact, but it was more psychological. I just wanted to be in a bubble. I had no desire to speak. I just wanted to be alone, which was very difficult. This whole experience has made me much stronger, — quotes the words of Masi News Corp.
