Jacques Villeneuve: Verstappen is a real car

1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve summed up the results of the Hungarian Grand Prix, admitting that he was impressed with Max Verstappen’s results and form this season…

Jacques Villeneuve: “As we move from individual races to the big picture, we can expect a lot more intrigue in the battle for the title. The new rules are working, the riders can chase each other much closer, act more aggressively in the race. This is amazing! We’ve seen great fights between Ferrari and Red Bull. Ferrari is not inferior in speed, if not faster, but in the standings and the constructors’ championship Red Bull has a huge advantage.

Nothing has been decided yet, there are many races ahead of us, but if the trend continues, if Verstappen performs at this level and Red Bull continues to develop the car, it will be very difficult to stop them.

Max is a real car. He wasn’t even tired after the race. I don’t think he needs a vacation! This year he is incredibly strong and his team makes no mistakes. If something goes wrong, he and Red Bull create the conditions to fix it. In Hungary he could just minimize the losses, he didn’t have to win, but he won. That’s Red Bull’s approach – they don’t put any pressure on themselves and then they have a great race.

The car seems to suit Verstappen more and more and Sergio Perez lost some speed after Monaco, which is a bit strange. Since the new car has been put on it, it has become easier for Verstappen, and more difficult for Perez, although before that it was the other way around.

In Hungary I was surprised by the decisions of some teams. Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, everyone here is at the highest level – the best racers, mechanics, engineers and strategists. How could several teams, not just Ferrari, decide at once to switch to hard tires when Alpine showed they didn’t work? Didn’t they see the race? It’s incomprehensible how this can happen in a sport where only the best of the best works.

Overall, the weekend in Budapest was great. I have never seen so many people at the Hungarian Grand Prix. After a great first part of the season, Formula 1 has earned a holiday, but I’m already looking forward to continuing.”
