World champion Damon Hill tried to understand in the Sky Sports F1 podcast the reasons for the frequent mistakes of George Russell, who team leader Toto Wolff asked to focus on in the last race…
Damon Hill: “It has a negative impact on a driver if your boss coaches you over the team radio during a race and tells you to concentrate.
I think George’s problem is that Mercedes is not doing so well and he is trying to get more out of the car than is possible.
Lewis is leaving for Ferrari next year and George wants to prove to the team that he is capable of becoming number one, but he has yet to achieve that. I think so, because they always talk about who his partner will be, not about George.
I think Mercedes should support him more, give him a sense of confidence, then maybe he won’t have to try so hard to prove himself in the race, to compensate for the car’s shortcomings.
George needs to cool down. He has speed, he has ability, he is very smart. He can help them if they give him a little more comfort.”
