Oscar Piastri, who has never raced in Formula 1, now plays a key role in the transfer market.
The 21-year-old Australian has been part of Alpine’s youth program since 2020. It is rare that so much effort and money is put into preparing a future Formula 1 driver, but there are reasons for this. Piastri is considered a future star. Like Charles Leclerc and George Russell, he won the Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles on his first attempt.
This year Alpine provided Oscar with last year’s car, mechanics and engineers for ten days of testing around the world. He has already completed 3,500 of the 5,000 test kilometers and will train at Alpine on Friday, driving a simulator and attending technical briefings. “We don’t just help his career with money, we put our heart and soul into him,” said Otmar Szafnauer.
Piastri was only out of contract this season as Alpine occupied both places, and with Alonso set to be extended for 2023, his manager Mark Webber was in talks with other teams. Notably at McLaren, where Oscar could replace Daniel Ricciardo next year. And according to rumors, the parties have already signed a letter of intent.
After Fernando Alonso announced a move to Aston Martin, a vacancy has become available at Alpine and the French team expect Piastri to replace him. And multiple transitions at once depend on the young Australian’s decision. In particular, the fate of Daniel Riccardo, who may, under certain circumstances, continue his career with Alpine in 2023.
