Russell leads in second practice

The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was the first of the 2022 season in the sprint format on Saturday. The format was finalized, eliminating obvious shortcomings, but Saturday practice, which takes place in a closed park where teams cannot change the cars, remained. Apparently, so viewers who bought tickets for Saturday saw something other than a half-hour sprint.

On Friday it was wet and cold which affected the power balance in qualifying, and on Saturday the sun came out. The weather was almost summer, there were fewer tire problems than the day before – and a lot of people were accelerating.

At the start of the session, Riccardo’s car was disassembled – when the engine was started in the morning, the engineers saw telemetry problems and looked for the cause, but Daniel never left.

The second McLaren car had problems with the brakes. After three laps, Lando Norris returned to the pits, handed the car over to the mechanics and was able to leave at the last minute, having checked the functioning of the systems.

In the Alfa Romeo pits they worked on Bottas’ car and solved the problem that caused him to stop on track at the end of Friday qualifying – for some reason part of the exhaust system was disconnected, hot gases entered the surrounding parts and burn them. Valtteri also spent the entire session in the pits. The team hopes to cope with the start of the sprint.

Racers assessed performance and tire wear over the track by doing long series of laps without risking damaging their cars for the sprint. There were almost no mistakes and departures, the second practice turned out to be the first session of the weekend, which was not interrupted by red flags.

George Russell led the way with a lap time of 1:19.457.
