Alonso: We have lost a bit of the heroism we had before

Fernando Alonso made his Formula 1 debut in 2001. Since then, the cars have become much more complex, but the Spaniard says in an interview with The Times that he does not feel the same respect.

Fernando Alonso: “It has become easier for the current generation of drivers to drive in Formula 1. I can’t say I miss those times, but I remember feeling respected when I made my debut and came to the league. because I was one of those heroes who drove these super fast cars.

Nowadays, when a young driver makes his debut at the age of 16 or 17, it is experienced very differently. Over the years we have lost a little of what we used to be heroic.

I remember how twenty years ago, when I came to Formula 1, the engineer could not explain anything to me about the car. Everyone believed that a driver should know how to drive a car.

We had no simulators, each course had to be learned during a walk before the start of the weekend. Now the racers are very well prepared, they drive 200-300 laps on the simulator and know every bump, every corner, every curb very well. And the teams have all the information and can tell the driver how to brake in a certain corner, how to warm up the tires, how to prepare for qualifying and how to drive in the race.”
