Fernando Alonso: “At 50 I won’t compete in Formula 1, but I will continue to compete”

Double Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso said he rules out the possibility of continuing his career with Royal Racing until the age of 50, but has no plans to leave motorsport.

— Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio won the third of five F1 titles at the age of 44. And he still had to become champion twice. What thoughts does this make you think?

— That in 2026 I will be 44 years old (laughs).

“Well, that might be a good sign, right?”

– It was a different time then. I think things are more complicated now. But in Formula 1 you largely depend on the car. The regulations will change in 2026. Maybe your team can make a car that’s a little better than the rest. And you will have the opportunity to win the championship. The opportunity will always be there and you will have to fight for it.

— Will Fernando Alonso, at 50, still compete in Formula 1?

– Of course not. But I will definitely continue to compete. I love racing. Last weekend, I watched the 24 Hours of Le Mans on TV. The Dakar is an exciting race in which Carlos Sainz [старший] winning and dominating in their 60s.
