Williams boss Jost Capito attended the FIA press conference in Imola on Saturday. Some of the questions the German leader answered concerned Nicholas Latifi, whose results are far from those of teammate Alex Albon.
Q: How hard is it for Nicholas now? Is self confidence one of his problems?
Jost Capito: Yes, partially. We know Formula 1 is also brain games, right? He can fly fast and get the same lap times as Alex if he has no problems. I don’t doubt him. Compared to last year, the cars have become more difficult to drive and he has to solve it, but he has the full support of the team.
Nicholas has had a few crashes that could shake his confidence but the team is giving him maximum support and we are confident he will cope.
Question Some riders have already made it clear that they don’t like the new weekend schedule, if you’re dealing with the press on Friday, but working with journalists on Thursday. What do you think of this?
Jost Capito: Yes, this issue was discussed with other team leaders the day before, what time someone goes to bed and things like that. The subject is interesting, but we believe that there are still a few races to go, and only then can we analyze what has become better thanks to the new format and what has become worse. Then you can discuss the need for some changes.
Q: Let’s go back to Nicholas Latifi’s confidence. He had several accidents in the previous four races, which seriously affected the course of events and even the fate of the title. Did it affect him in some way?
Jost Capito: It’s hard to say. If anything touched him last year, it was the comments and threats on social media, but we got him through it.
Yes, Nicholas had a few incidents that didn’t really improve his confidence, we work with him and I think he is already better at handling problems.
Q: Are you sure the FIA will be able to monitor compliance with budget constraints? Are there fears that the teams will find and use “grey areas”?
Jost Capito: We can say that all teams are working hard with the FIA to ensure that the restrictions are respected. The control is huge, but work is still being done on how it can be improved. If the team finds a “grey area”, it discusses it with the FIA. The system is very strict, but we need to develop it further.
I believe that there is already good cooperation between the CFOs of the teams, which will develop further. The FIA is also working hard on this issue, and they are very good at controlling everything.
