There is a real emergency in the paddock of the Barcelona circuit: smoke was coming into the McLaren camper near the kitchenette, the staff had to be urgently evacuated and the fire brigade was called. Because emergency services are regularly present on the highway, both they and the doctors were on site very quickly.
Judging from the stories of team members who witnessed the incident, the smoke came from technical cavities under the floor, so reaching the source of the smoke is not so easy. The problem is probably related to a fault in the power system.
It all happened in the middle of the day, when there were many press representatives and team guests in the guest area of the camper. The riders’ rooms are on the ground floor, so Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and their assistants had to urgently collect helmets and other equipment and move them to the team pits. However, most likely spare sets should be stored there.
According to Sky Sports, none of the staff were injured, but some were asked by doctors to put on oxygen masks.
The unpleasant smell of smoke spread throughout the paddock, but this is certainly not the only consequence of the emergency, and the extent to which this will affect McLaren’s fighting capabilities is not yet clear, as the team’s short official statement does not mention this speaks:
“This morning we evacuated our staff from the camper due to fire risk. The team has been safely evacuated and the local fire brigade is dealing with the problem.”
