Ferrari expected to compete for pole in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, but only took fifth and sixth place at the start. Both Scuderia drivers indicated that the car did not have enough speed to compete for higher positions.
Charles Leclerc (5th): “The result is disappointing because we expected that if we were not on pole, we would be very close to first place. But today we were much further than we expected. So I’m disappointed.
On the other hand, I did a great job with my engineer by completely changing the settings, and I regained confidence in the car. However, the pace wasn’t there today. We tried everything in the first and third sectors of the circuit, but it didn’t work.”
Carlos Sainz (6th): “The opponents turned out to be faster than we thought. After free practice I thought we could fight for pole, but in the second part of qualifying, when everyone showed their true speed, we realized we lost two or three tenths, which is a lot on this lap.
In the final I did two good laps, which were only a few thousandths apart, so I don’t think I could have done anything more today.
The situation is what it is. Today’s problems remind me a bit of the problems we had in Suzuka and China. Apparently our weaknesses come to the fore on these types of circuits. Let’s see what we can do to win back.”
