Former Formula 1 driver Paul di Resta has responded to Oscar Piastri’s announcement that he will not drive for Alpine in 2023. According to di Resta, Oscar’s words only testify to one thing: the driver is guaranteed a place behind the wheel in another team.
Paul di Resta: “Neither I nor my colleagues have heard anything in advance about Fernando Alonso’s transfer to Aston Martin. This step also came as a surprise for Otmar Szafnauer. Fernando’s decision led to a very logical decision to give the place to Piastri, who is part of the Alpine youth program. The team has long been lobbying for his interests and even trying to find a place for him, considering Oscar their asset for the future.
However, Piastri issued a strange statement – he rejected the offer of a team that is in the top four and on an upward trajectory. This can only mean one thing: he is guaranteed a place in another team.
Who will he play for? For McLaren? For Williams? And what’s next for Daniel Ricciardo? I have no idea how events will develop further. Alpine wanted to put him behind the wheel, but now it is clear that Piastri will be driving for another team.”
