Charles Leclerc is dissatisfied with his partner’s performance

Early in the race in Barcelona, Carlos Sainz attacked Charles Leclerc and a minor collision occurred between the Ferrari drivers. Both continued, closer to the finish Charles was ahead of Carlos and after the race he made several comments about his partner.

Carlos Sainz in turn said that Charles complains too often after the finish.

Charles Leclerc (5th): “We tried everything we could, but I don’t think we worked the best as a team. I did everything I could, but that’s just the pace we have. I didn’t have enough lap time to overtake George Russell, but it is what it is. The biggest problem this weekend was that we weren’t fast enough.

Before the race we discussed with the team that we both have to take the best possible care of the tires in the beginning. We knew very well how important it was to do this in turn fourteen. And that’s exactly what I did, and Carlos spared no tires at all in the last corner and overtook me.

Too bad, because I fell behind because of this. My front wing was damaged. They were small, but still affected the car’s behavior. If you look at how much I lost to George at the finish, it will become clear why I’m upset. We will discuss this within the team and I am sure we will find a solution.

I won’t get too emotional. It was Carlos’ home race, a very important moment in his career, and I believe he was very motivated to do something spectacular, but I’m not exactly the right person to carry out such maneuvers. But it is good. He knew I was inside and he knew he could have turned around like he did.

Carlos Sainz (6th): “Closer to the finish I missed Charles. He complains about something too often after the finish. He’s entitled to his opinion but at this stage of the season I don’t know why I shouldn’t have attacked him.

We were on new Soft sets, while the Mercedes were on rolled-in soft tires. I had to attack while the new tires gave me an advantage to stay ahead of the Mercedes, which we had talked about before the start.

I caught up with Charles. I don’t know if he made a mistake or monitored the tire wear too much. Then I almost overtook Lewis, then I made a cut and almost overtook Russell at the pit stop. I think I did what I had to do as a driver.

I tried everything to keep Mercedes behind me, but this weekend they were just faster.

Charles saved more tires than I did, and closer to the finish it paid off for him. He was ahead of me thanks to the Soft-Medium-Soft strategy. I preferred a more aggressive option: Soft-Medium-Hard, and it didn’t work. As a result, George and I turned out to be too slow closer to the finish and our opponents in Soft rode very fast.”
