In June, the US state of Colorado organizes traditional competitions in speed climbing of the Pikes Peak mountain, which always attracts more attention from the public and the sports press.
French racer Roman Dumas yesterday confirmed his reputation as a master of this special genre by becoming winner for the fifth time. On the almost twenty kilometer long circuit with its 156 corners, he again drove a specially prepared electric car, but this time it was a Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck.
Dumas completed the most difficult mountain course in 8 minutes and 53.563 seconds, more than 10 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, before admitting there were some adventures.
“The race was very difficult,” he noted. “I don’t know what happened at the start, but the car stalled completely on its own, this has never happened before.” But I didn’t panic, I looked at the instrument readings – everything was fine.
I independently restarted the electronics responsible for the operation of the power plant and was still able to start. They even told me on the radio that the race had been stopped by red flags – I think because I stopped on the track. But I had already started again, so I didn’t know whether to stop or not – in general there was a misunderstanding.
In the first segment I saw that I was 26 seconds slower than my provisional time, and I realized that everything was going well, I just had to attack and everything would be fine. But this is Pikes Peak, it’s impossible to predict anything here!
I won for the fifth time and it is a great honor for me! I would like to thank the team for all their efforts over several months.”
Roman really succeeded again. He also holds the absolute Pike Peak record from 2018, when he raced around this circuit in an experimental electric Volkswagen ID R car in 7 minutes. 57.148 seconds.
