Horner: We need Sergio to fight

Compared to Max Verstappen’s victory, his teammate Sergio Perez’s eighth place in Barcelona doesn’t look too impressive. After the finish, Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner admitted that given the increased competition, the team needed the Mexican driver to fight on the front row.

Christian Horner: “The competition is gaining strength and we need Sergio to join this battle. And he knows it, and the team knows it. If he ends up at the bottom of the top eight we will lose opportunities because we cannot share the strategy between our riders and so on.

In the first four or five races of the season, Sergio looked fantastic and we need to get him back into those positions. He’s had some tough races where things didn’t go his way, but Perez is a confident driver.

In Barcelona he drove a good race and earned points. Before the start, our calculations showed that he could finish eighth from eleventh, and he achieved this result by implementing a three pit stop strategy. I hope this will give him confidence for the coming weekends, which will be important for him.”
