The Spanish Grand Prix is a dress rehearsal for next year’s title battle
What we are seeing this season in terms of battles between Max Verstappen and his rivals is a dress rehearsal for next season. Red Bull have caught up and we now have an interesting battle with McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari. This is a precursor to the title battle that will take place next season.
2024 promises to be a defining year for Max Verstappen
What Max Verstappen is doing in his Red Bull this season removes any doubt about who is responsible for the progress he has made since 2021. The Dutch driver’s successes in 2022 and 2023 have started to be attributed to the car. This season he is starting to prove once again that it is the driver that counts.
Lando Norris and McLaren lost the race
The race was more or less decided on the first lap when Lando Norris lost his position to Max Verstappen. If he hadn’t, we would have seen another winner. Unfortunately for Norris, he only has himself to blame.
That’s why, although McLaren deserves credit for fighting at the Spanish Grand Prix, they can’t be praised too much because they should have won the race.
Mercedes should be happy with the Spanish Grand Prix
The first step for Mercedes in Barcelona was to confirm that what the team showed in Canada was no fluke. And the German team demonstrated it. It also showed that the team can now challenge for the podium at different circuits.
Ferrari steps on an old rake
Rapid updates, less than ideal strategy and an inability to get Sainz out of Leclerc’s path quickly enough in the second and third stints. This was a Ferrari that looked suspiciously like the team run by Mattia Binotto rather than Fred Vasser. During the Spanish Grand Prix, Ferrari demonstrated that the team still had work to do to achieve its great ambitions. The Ferrari finished fourth this weekend.
Alpine tested positive
Last season, Alpine finished sixth in the championship. Judging by how the team is slowly starting to become the best in the second tier, they will repeat this result. In Catalonia the car performed perfectly, the next step now should be to continue improving the car in the coming stages.
Carlos Sainz won’t get a seat at Mercedes or Red Bull anytime soon
Carlos Sainz, who ignored the pre-race agreement with Charles Leclerc and overtook him, is not the type of driver a top team needs. Sainz is not a team player at all. Seeing how Sainz ignores pre-race deals, Mercedes or Red Bull should be happy they didn’t offer him a contract.
RB failed at the Spanish Grand Prix
The Spanish Grand Prix was the first race in which RB introduced a comprehensive set of upgrades, and from the looks of it, the team didn’t even know how to make it work. The problem in this situation is that Alpine is starting to take a step back.
Spanish Grand Prix showed Red Bull made a mistake with Sergio Perez
A gap of 3 to 4 tenths of a second is created when the car is dominant. This doesn’t work when the team is engaged in a tense battle and the team leader is left alone with his opponents. The Spanish Grand Prix was a race in which Sergio Pérez finished eighth and his teammate won. This is not the first time this has happened and it will continue. For Red Bull, the Spanish Grand Prix is a clear sign that Sergio Pérez is not up to the task of the team.
