Mercedes drivers were on the podium at the last two stages in Canada and Spain. George Russell sees these results as proof of Mercedes’ progress and expressed his confidence that he and his teammate Lewis Hamilton will win races this year.
George Russell: “I am 100% sure that our speed is real. Yes, in Barcelona we finished about twenty seconds behind the winner, which is still a lot, but we know we had the fastest car in Canada. We know we won’t have the fastest car every weekend, but I feel like our pace has changed.
The team knows what the next big step is that we need to take with the updates, so we are confident in our capabilities.
We are currently fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, which means we will have more time in the wind tunnel than our rivals and we know how to use this advantage well.
Everyone in the team is looking forward to the remaining stages of the season with optimism. I am confident that we will win races this year and next year. I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but following the introduction of new products we showed a strong pace in Canada and Spain and led the races for two weekends in a row. I don’t think we expected something like this at the beginning of the season.”
