On Thursday, Lando Norris was asked in Austria how he experiences the results of previous races: is he happy with the podium places or is he concerned about missed victories?
“It all depends on how you look at it,” replied the McLaren driver, who is second in the championship after ten rounds of the season. – To be honest, you can look at it both ways. The team has earned a lot of points, we have performed well, but we are striving for victories here and I always strive for the best possible result.
There was a potential chance to win, but this was only in theory, and to take advantage of it it was necessary for everything to work perfectly. At the same time I have to compete with Max Verstappen, he is one of the best drivers in the history of Formula 1 and performs at an incredibly high level.
Moreover, not everything is perfect for us yet, for example my start the previous weekend was not bad, but still not the best, and I had to pay a certain price for it, so everything is simple. I think we only missed out on winning once and that was in Spain, but sometimes that happens. Even if you have the fastest car, all it takes is one little mistake and you’ll never reach the top of the podium.
In general, it all depends on the psychological mood, and personally I am quite worried about the victory we missed last weekend. But at the same time, we should not forget that there was also a lot of good. So overall I’m happy, although together with the whole McLaren team we really want to win races.
If this does not work, there is already cause for concern. But we were still ahead of 18 other cars and we can certainly be happy with that. However, we need to sharpen up, work on the nuances, and together with the team we are doing exactly that. Although mistakes are inevitable, we work hard to achieve our goals.”
