Toto Wolff: I’m coming to the final to cheer on the Austrians!

In an interview with OE 24, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff spoke about his relationship with Lewis Hamilton, his chances of success this weekend and Euro 2024…

Q: An anonymous letter about “sabotage” Lewis Hamilton claims you hold a grudge…
Toto Wolff: That is absolutely not true. I always fight for justice. Lewis and I talk every day. He believes that we need to get rid of this negativity.

Q: You appear together in public as if Hamilton had never announced his move to Ferrari…
Toto Wolff: The interpretation of events from outside is sometimes completely untrue. Just ignore it!

Q: Let’s move on to the sporting side of things: Mercedes still has the most wins in Spielberg…
Toto Wolff: These days, past victories don’t matter so much. It’s what happens this weekend that counts.

Question: You suddenly have another fan. Did Helmut Marko say he’s rooting for your success?
Toto Wolff: Did he really say that?

Q: Yes, he hopes that Mercedes will take points from Red Bull’s pursuers – McLaren and Ferrari.
Toto Wolff: It’s great when this happens. Now everything is going in the right direction.

Question: Can you win in Spielberg?
Toto Wolff: No. Spielberg is not suitable for our car, at least according to the new regulations.

Q: What do you think of the new gravel surface at Turns 9 and 10, which eliminates penalties for exceeding track limits?
Toto Wolff: I think that’s good. If you fly too far you will damage your car. Racers will be wary of this.

Q: Speaking of drivers, Max answered “Yes” in Spielberg on Thursday when asked if he would stay with Red Bull next year…
Toto Wolff: Did he really say that? I don’t think he definitively said yes, but I wasn’t there.

Question: Do you still hope to see Max in Mercedes?
Toto Wolff: I have already said that we will keep the vacancy as long as possible. First of all, we need to make our car faster. If the car is fast, fast racers will want to race in it.

Question: Are you a Verstappen fan?
Toto Wolff: I met him when he was a child, and now I admire his achievements.

Right now Max is the best racer and anyone who gets the chance would love to see him in his car. Ola Källenius (Chairman of the Board of Directors of Daimler AG) thinks the same.

Question: Will you find time to attend any of the European Football Championship matches?
Toto Wolff: I follow every match of the Austrian team. I’m coming to Berlin for the final to watch the Austrians.

Q: The Austrians are in the final – are you serious?
Toto Wolff: Why not? I admire the fighting spirit of our team led by Rangnick. They constantly apply pressure and do not allow themselves to relax. This strength is a pleasure to watch. For me, this team is the strongest of all our teams that I have seen at the European Championship.
