Just like in the previous stage in Spain, Nico Hulkenberg again defeated Kevin Magnussen, his Haas teammate, in Austria and reached the final this time…
Nico Hulkenberg (9th): “In the first part of qualifying we had not yet reached the desired level of speed, because I was still trying to get a comfortable feeling behind the wheel. The behaviour of the cars gradually improved, as did the lap times, and it is especially important that this was the case in the decisive attempt, which allowed us to qualify for the final.
Even though the third session didn’t go well, I think we did everything we could today because we certainly can’t compete with the eight fastest cars starting in front of us.
In today’s sprint Kevin showed a very good pace and was able to pull away from Aston Martin and Alpine, so I don’t think we should be afraid of them. I think our car has a good pace and we can easily compete with all the teams in the middle of the pack.”
Kevin Magnussen (12th): “There were no particular problems, just the results were very tight and on the first try I couldn’t get the most out of the car. But overall qualifying went well, and that’s really good.
It turned out that I was not as competitive on soft tires compared to other rubber compounds, and this still needs to be analyzed. I hope we don’t have to use soft tires during the race, but since we start from a good position tomorrow, we will try to fight for the points.”
