The stewards of the Austrian Grand Prix have summoned RB driver Yuki Tsunoda for investigation after comments on the radio during qualifying.
In the first session, Yuki spoke rudely to his rivals, who were standing in the pit lane and were in no hurry to get out on track. Tsunoda impatiently said the following sentence on the radio: “These guys are just mentally handicapped.”
Apparently Tsunoda’s comment referred to the Sauber drivers, but the stewards saw in the RB driver’s words a possible violation of paragraph 12.2.1.k of the International Sports Code. The point is that Tsunoda could offend people with real diseases with his words.
Racers calling stewards for derogatory comments are nothing new. For example, during the race weekend in Portugal in 2020, Max Verstappen was called to the stewards for words addressed to Lance Stroll, who called the Dutch driver a ‘Mongol’. In that case, Max escaped sanctions.
