Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur, in his comments on the results of qualifying at the Red Bull Ring, tried to find positive aspects, although it is clear that Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc did not perform well for one reason or another.
Frédéric Vasseur: “All in all, we were hoping for a higher position. In his last attempt, Charles started the lap very well, but it was only in turn 4 that he locked up the brakes, losing more than one and a half tenths. But I think that despite that, it was still necessary to continue the attempt, and Charles attacked, and as it happened, so it happened.
But the main reason he only finished sixth is that he spent his only normal effort in the final session on rolled-in tyres, not fresh ones.
If we talk about Carlos, he qualified confidently, losing by only a hundredth of a second to George Russell, who showed the third result. In my opinion we made small improvements compared to yesterday, and the car was already driving better in Turns 9 and 10, although there were still some problems in 6 and 7. However, we are improving gradually, although perhaps a little late.
I believe that in tomorrow’s race the same picture that we saw in the sprint will repeat itself, namely: a “DRS train” will form, and everyone will ride one after the other. But if you manage to get into a good enough position, you can recover something.
But it can also be the other way around: if you are at the back of this ‘train’, you can easily overheat both the tyres and the car as a whole. A lot will therefore depend on the start and the first lap; moreover, tactics and pit stops, unlike in a sprint, will play a certain role in the race, so everyone will try to use these factors as well.”
