Lando Norris qualified second at Spielberg, four tenths of a second behind pole position holder Max Verstappen. After the session, the McLaren driver admitted that the reigning world champion was out of reach today.
His teammate Oscar Piastri posted the third fastest time, but his result was annulled for exceeding track limits, and Oscar moved up to seventh place.
Lando Norris (2nd): “I think we reached the maximum today. Max was in a class of his own. He was clearly much faster than us, so I am happy with my result.
The track conditions were difficult: the session was harder than yesterday and the gaps were much smaller. In such conditions it was more difficult to do perfect laps. But my lap was good enough, so I accept the result.
It just won’t happen during the race. We’ll try to do our best, but it’s clear that we need a bit more to stay ahead of Max and Red Bull. But I’ll try.
I will try to do my job better than in the sprint and I am looking forward to the start. There is a long race ahead, in which a lot can happen. Normally we do better in races than in qualifying, so we’ll see.”
Oscar Piastri (7th): “I’m surprised my time has been removed. We did all this work with the edges of the track, laying gravel in some places, and I didn’t even go completely off the track – I stayed on the track. It was probably my best attempt in Turn 6 and my time was lost.
I don’t know why they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to change the last two corners while ignoring the other corners outside the track.
In any case, everyone was able to stay within the track in this corner, but not me. Sometimes it happens.”
