Wasser: In the end it wasn’t a bad weekend

Ferrari did not have much hope for a good result in Austria, because already in the first days of the weekend it became clear that the SF-24 of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz was inferior in terms of speed to the McLaren and Mercedes of George Russell, not to mention the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

But the conditions during Sunday’s race at the Red Bull Ring were such that an incident involving Max Verstappen opened the way for Sainz to the podium.

“After today’s race we have mixed feelings,” admits Frédéric Vasseur, Italian team principal. – The positive is that Carlos performed well, was on the podium and earned a lot of points for the team. But in Charles’ case we earned nothing because he was involved in a racing incident at the start.

In the end it wasn’t a bad weekend, even though we had reasons to be angry, because we probably should have handled things better, especially in the beginning.

Since Friday we have gradually improved, but it was not enough and we have to keep working because we need both cars to get maximum points at every race.

During the sprint, Charles’ car had problems with the engine overheating, but we could have done better in qualifying and in the race. We will have to work again on increasing the speed in qualifying, because with such a density of results, the higher the starting position, the greater the chances, the greater the chance that we can take advantage of new opportunities and at the same time avoid problems.

We need to set ambitious goals, look ahead and fully concentrate on preparing for the podium at Silverstone. The programme for the coming weekend is standard, i.e. Friday we have two practice sessions to really work on the set-up. The latest version of the aerodynamic body kit has proven to be quite effective in some aspects, and now it needs to be developed.

Finally, I would like to note that we saw intense rivalry on the track, when the riders really fought, and in the end the unexpected winner celebrated success, but no less interesting battles took place in the whole peloton. All this, of course, contributes greatly to the popularity of our sport.”
