Russell: I understood that Max and Lando might clash

George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix, benefiting from an incident between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, but made it clear after the finish that his success was no coincidence at all.

Lewis Hamilton finished 4th and also noted that the Mercedes team deserved this victory.

George Russel (1st): “It was incredible! The start of the race was not easy, we had to fight to stay at least in 3rd position. And then I saw on the screens along the track how Max Verstappen and Lando Norris fought in a tough battle, and I knew that Lando definitely wanted to win.

But our team did a great job so that we also had the opportunity to intervene in this dispute. You have to be ahead of the curve to be able to take advantage of the situation when the opportunity arises – that is exactly what we did.

Max and Norris were fighting each other, and I didn’t even believe right away that we were that close to their fight. I was only 12 seconds behind them and I realized that they could very well collide. In such cases you always dream about it.

But I’m just really proud to reach the top of the podium. We’ve made huge progress since the start of the season and the last few races have been very successful. But there are more races like that to come!

It is no secret that Max and Lando’s cars are still a bit faster than ours, but lately I have been trying to stay in third position and I am ready to take any opportunity if something happens in front of me. But today I am very proud of our whole team, this is an absolutely beautiful moment for all of us!”

Lewis hamilton (4th): “Congratulations to George and all our team! Everyone at the Brackley and Brixworth bases fully deserves this result. They have worked hard to increase the speed of the car and we are closing in on the leaders.

We have put so much effort into achieving these results, and today’s victory is a well-deserved reward.

Speaking of me, my weekend in Austria didn’t go well. Unfortunately, my car got damaged in the early stages of the race and this affected the whole Grand Prix. But now we’re going to prepare for Silverstone, where we have a very special weekend ahead of us, and I’m already looking forward to meeting the British fans.

I hope this circuit suits our car better than the Austrian one, so we’ll see what we can achieve.”
