Pirelli prepares toughest tyres for Silverstone

The British Grand Prix is the 12th stage of the season, i.e. it concludes the first half of the 24-race 2024 championship. The British circuit, with a circuit length of 5.861 km and 18 corners, is a classic, as it hosted the very first World Championship Grand Prix in 1950.

To this day it is considered one of the fastest and most difficult, with the most demanding demands on the driver and the car. Some corners, notably the famous Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel, have to be taken at very high speeds and the tyres are subjected to maximum stress.

The lateral overload there is more than 5 grams, so the tire manufacturers Pirelli brought the hardest rubber compounds to Silverstone: C1 – Hard, C2 – Medium and C3 – Soft. Because there are more right turns on a circle than left turns, the left front tire wears out the most on the British motorway.

As ever, there are potential weather surprises in England, including this coming weekend, so Formula 1 teams must prepare for every scenario. In 2023, the race was held on dry asphalt and most competitors managed to limit themselves to a single pit stop, although in the past the preferred tactic was a schedule with two visits to the pits.

But a year ago, at the British round of the championship, Pirelli introduced a new tyre design and were already better able to cope with the speeds typical of Silverstone.

This coming weekend, the 75th British Grand Prix will take place at this circuit, 58 of which have been held at Silverstone.
