Ferrari Racing Academy member Oliver Berman will drive a Haas in the first practice session for the British Grand Prix. On the eve of the Silverstone stage, the Scuderia press office asked Oliver several questions.
Q: What does Formula 1 at Silverstone mean to you, a British driver?
Oliver Berman: For us Brits, Silverstone is a special circuit, not only because of the atmosphere and the fans who clearly support the British drivers, but also because of the spectators in general, most of whom are real motorsport experts.
That said, Silverstone is a beautiful circuit, with some parts of it holding a special place in racing history. Going through a Copse or a set of Maggots-Becketts corners while driving a “formula” gives you the chance to experience sensations that are beyond words. Ask any driver, from Formula 1 to Formula 3, and you won’t find anyone who doesn’t love Silverstone.
Q: How much has being a member of the Ferrari Racing Academy helped your career?
Oliver Berman: The Ferrari Racing Academy has helped me improve my technical knowledge and fitness. By participating in this program I have learned things that I would never have learned on my own.
Last year I had the chance to take part in the official Grand Prix training for the first time and I will never forget the moment I drove the 2021 Formula 1 car for the first time in Fiorano.
This year I am a reserve driver, which gives me the opportunity to work with the team and spend a lot of time on the simulator.
Q: When did you realize you wanted to be a racer?
Oliver Berman: At home, our family was into motorsports as my grandfather and father raced at club level. As a result, by the time I was three or four years old, I knew the names of all the cars, race cars and road cars.
In fact, it was my grandfather who first took me to the go-kart track, rented a kart and I got behind the wheel for the first time. I was very happy when my parents bought me cards for Christmas. Since then I have never stopped racing cars and I still think it is the best feeling in the world.
