Mercedes has published a new team sustainability report covering the period from August 2021 to August 2022. As Mercedes said in a statement, the report “is intended to provide a transparent and comprehensive overview of our environmental and social initiatives.”
By 2022, the team planned to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% compared to the baseline for which the 2018 emissions figures were taken. The team managed to exceed the targets and move towards zero emissions by 2030.
As part of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Accelerate 25 program from 2021 to 2025, at least 25% of new hires must come from currently underrepresented groups. In 2021, 38% of new team members came from underrepresented groups, compared to 32% at the end of June 2022.
The number of women among the team’s employees increased from 12% to 15% and the number of employees representing national minorities increased from 3% to 7%. At the same time, Mercedes notes that these figures do not live up to expectations – the team believes that several groups are not widely represented.
Mercedes employees are active in philanthropy and have already raised £75,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK. The team expects to increase fees to £100k by December 2022.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal: “Motorsport is driven by passion. We operate in the fastest and most dynamic sport in the world and we must use this global platform to be more than leaders – we want to be pioneers. Over the past few years, we have worked tirelessly to change and understand how we affect the world. We are fully committed to sustainable development – it is the future of all of us.
Whether we devote our resources to promoting technological advancements that will help society address the environmental challenges we face, or striving to increase diversity among our employees and support those in need, our passion continues than race cars. This is reflected in everything we do.
Our team solves problems. We set ourselves goals to become more sustainable in everything we do. We are only at the beginning of this journey, but we have already set ourselves enormous challenges in striving for a sustainable future. I am very proud of our team for the achievements we have already made and for the forward-looking strategies we will pursue in the coming years.
What happens on track is inextricably linked to what happens in the world and makes the whole team go faster and further.”
