The weather forecast for the day of the race promises a high chance of precipitation, in which case strategy will be determined by the situation, and if the road surface remains dry, Pirelli will wait for one pit stop.
The time loss in Imola’s pit lane is more than on any other track – 28 seconds, so the teams are minimizing the number of visits to the pits.
In the event of a dry race, starting on Medium offers a wide range of laps to transition to Hard. It is possible to start on Soft in an attempt to bounce back on the first lap and then move to Hard, but this option is less flexible.
Mario Isola, Pirelli: “During Saturday’s practice, the riders were able to work on slicks for the first time this weekend, with an emphasis on Medium and Soft. The softer tires performed better than many expected, which is why most riders chose this compound for sprinting.
This was somewhat unexpected, I personally would have expected most to choose the more traditional medium in such cases. The Soft tires gritted a bit, but no more than you’d expect under the conditions – after yesterday’s rain and cold weather.
There are some interesting strategic options for tomorrow’s race, provided of course that the track remains dry, which is by no means guaranteed.”
