Alex Albon: We’ve been experimenting with settings

During Friday’s practice sessions for the British Grand Prix, the Williams team fielded three drivers – in the first, Franco Colapinto, who made his debut behind the wheel of Formula 1 during the official session, took to the track. In the second session, the Argentine driver was replaced by Logan Sargent.

Alex Albon completed both practice sessions and said he was pleased with the car’s pace over a long run of laps, while qualifying pace left much to be desired.

Alex Albon (13th): “The day proved to be ambiguous. The long lap speed of the car looks promising and the car is running well compared to last year. But the speed in qualifying mode still needs work.

“We have experimented a lot with settings and tyres, but have not found the right balance yet. In the evening we will study the collected data and come back stronger. We will adjust the settings a little bit, and the British weather factor can give us a chance to reach the qualifying final.”

Logan Sargent (17th): “This was the first time I missed the first practice, so I knew I had to pick up the pace quickly in the second session. I feel like I did it. The speed on empty was high, which is positive. We showed a high pace straight away, but it is clear that there are still areas that need to be worked on.

“With a full tank the picture is a bit different, so I have to work on that. I hope this weekend will be better, but first we have to wait for Saturday. Overall we started the weekend strong.”

Franco Colapinto (18th in first session): “My first practice is done! I loved every lap and every corner and I did my best. Great experience. I can do better because I didn’t get the maximum out of the car in all corners. With a full tank I did better, but on the old tyres I found it difficult of course.

“I am grateful to Williams for this opportunity and the support of a team that is performing at a completely different level. I am very proud of what we have achieved, but I have to keep working to get back behind the wheel one day.”
